The district administration in Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur on Tuesday relocated a sacred peepal tree from Brahmpukhar to Jabbal to make way for a four-lane road project. Officials said the move was part of efforts to safeguard old trees that hold deep religious and cultural value for local people.
The peepal tree (Ficus religiosa) was standing in the path of the Shimla–Mataur four-lane project. Since uprooting it was not an option due to strong religious sentiments attached to the tree, it was decided to shift it to Jabbal near Markand in the same district.
The relocation was carried out with technical help from the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and under the supervision of the forest department.
Officials said special care was taken to protect the roots and trunk to give the tree the best chance of survival and growth in its new site.
Bilaspur Sadar SDM Rajdeep Singh said the administration remained committed to balancing development with environmental protection and people’s beliefs.
“The successful relocation of the sacred tree has not only preserved the emotional and cultural heritage of the area, but also proved that modern construction work and environment protection can go hand in hand,” Singh said.
