Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday declared that separatism in Jammu and Kashmir has now become a part of history, citing the decision of two factions of the Hurriyat Conference—the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Movement and the Democratic Political Movement—to sever all ties with separatist ideology.
Welcoming this development, Shah credited the policies of the Narendra Modi-led government for unifying Jammu and Kashmir and eliminating separatist sentiment from the region.
“Separatism, which was once deeply rooted in Kashmir, has now been completely erased and has become history,” Shah stated.
In a post on social media platform X, the Home Minister wrote, “Two organisations of the Hurriyat, the J&K People’s Movement and the Democratic Political Movement, have announced the severing of all ties with separatism. I welcome this step towards strengthening Bharat’s unity and urge all such groups to come forward and shed separatism once and for all.”
Shah described the move as a significant victory for Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a unified, peaceful, and developed India, emphasising that the government remains committed to ensuring stability in the region.
This development comes in the wake of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) taking stringent action against other separatist factions in Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier, on March 11, the MHA declared two prominent separatist organizations—the Jammu and Kashmir Awami Action Committee (AAC), led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and the Jammu and Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM), founded by Mohammad Abbas Ansari—as “unlawful associations” under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for a period of five years.

In his post on X, Shah explained that these organisations had been actively involved in inciting unrest, disrupting law and order, and threatening the unity and sovereignty of the nation.
“Any entity engaging in activities against the country’s peace, order, and sovereignty will face the full force of the Modi government,” Shah asserted.
The Modi government has consistently maintained a firm stance against separatist elements in Jammu and Kashmir, taking decisive steps to neutralize their influence. The abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 marked a turning point in the region, leading to a substantial decline in separatist activities and terrorist incidents.
The latest development, with two Hurriyat factions publicly distancing themselves from separatism, is being seen as a further validation of the government's efforts to bring lasting peace to Jammu and Kashmir.
The Home Minister reiterated that the government remains vigilant against any forces that attempt to disrupt national unity and will continue to act decisively to safeguard the interests of the country.
As separatist movements lose traction in the region, the focus now shifts towards fostering economic growth, infrastructure development, and social stability, aligning with the Modi government’s broader vision for a progressive Jammu and Kashmir.
