Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Agartala on Friday evening to attend the 72nd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC), scheduled for 20 and 21 December.
The high-profile session will witness significant discussions on the region’s development, with the participation of key political leaders and officials.
Shah was warmly received at Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport by Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, former Chief Minister and Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb, BJP State President Rajib Bhattacharya, and other dignitaries.
The session is expected to address crucial issues related to infrastructure development, economic growth, and regional connectivity.
Alongside Shah, DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Union Minister of State Dr Sukanta Majumder will also be joining the session.
Other notable attendees include the Governors and Chief Ministers of the eight Northeastern states, as well as senior officials from central ministries.
“The Union Home Minister is scheduled to chair the plenary session on Saturday,” confirmed West Tripura District Magistrate Vishal Kumar.
In addition to the NEC plenary, Shah will review financial inclusion, credit delivery, priority sector lending, and digital inclusion in a meeting with bankers.
The NEC, established in 1971, has become a key regional planning agency, facilitating the socio-economic development of the Northeastern states.
During his visit, Shah is also set to visit the Bru (Reang) settlement camp at Bruhapara and address a public meeting at Masuraipara in Dhalai district on Sunday.
This marks his first visit to the settlement camp since the signing of the historic Bru settlement agreement in July 2018.
Meanwhile, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who arrived in Agartala with Governor Lt. Gen. Kaiwalya Trivikram Parnaik, remarked on the city’s scenic beauty.
“Nestled amidst serene hills, verdant valleys, and pristine waterscapes, Tripura is a land steeped in rich myths and legends, offering an unparalleled blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage,” Khandu said.
The plenary session will be a platform for in-depth discussions among political leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders, including the Governors and Chief Ministers of the Northeastern states, as well as top officials from the Centre.
The deliberations will focus on fostering economic growth, infrastructure development, and regional connectivity.
The NEC’s role has been instrumental in addressing regional challenges, with its development agenda serving as a framework for collaborative action between the Centre and the states.
