In a deeply emotional statement, the mother of the junior doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has expressed deep anguish, criticising West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s empathy and approach to the case.
Speaking to a broadcasting media house on Friday, the bereaved mother asserted that Banerjee, who is not a mother herself, cannot comprehend her profound loss.
“She (Mamata Banerjee) is not a mother. I know the value of my daughter, and I know what I have lost,” the distraught woman said.
She added that she did not care whether the investigation was handled by the CBI or the state authorities, her only concern was securing justice for her daughter.
The victim, a 31-year-old doctor, was killed on August 9. The case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 13, following a petition from the victim's parents to the Calcutta High Court.
The Chief Minister had previously visited the family on August 12 and requested five days to address their concerns, as noted in her speech on August 28.
In her address, Banerjee accused the CBI of undermining the investigation and failing to deliver justice, stating, “Sixteen days have passed. Where is the justice?” This comment has been met with criticism from the victim's mother, who questioned Banerjee’s commitment to the cause. “She refers to us, the parents and the protesters. Are we not entitled to seek justice?” the mother said.
Meanwhile, former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh continues to face questioning by the CBI at its headquarters in the CGO complex.
Ghosh is being interrogated in connection with both the rape and murder of the junior doctor and allegations of financial irregularities at the hospital.
He, along with seven others including the accused Sanjay Roy and a police SI, has undergone polygraph tests as part of the ongoing investigation.
