Unearthed in Sikkim: A 1.5-billion-year-old stromatolite fossil, revealing Earth's ancient microbial life.

Sikkim has made a remarkable discovery with the unearthing of a 1.5-billion-year-old stromatolite fossil in Mamley, Namchi district, placing it among the oldest known fossils globally.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed his excitement over the finding, which predates significant fossil discoveries in Canada, Australia, and the United States.

Stromatolites, ancient microbial structures, are believed to be one of Earth’s earliest life forms. These fossils, formed by layers of microorganisms, played a pivotal role in shaping the planet's atmosphere by producing oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen—elements essential for life.

The discovery adds significant value to Sikkim's natural heritage, highlighting its potential as a key site for both tourism and scientific research.

"This finding is a testament to one of Earth's earliest life forms, predating similar fossils found in Canada, Australia, and the USA," Chief Minister Tamang noted.
He further announced the government’s plans to develop the Fossil Park into a world-class tourist and research destination.

Under the direction of the Department of Mines and Geology, the Fossil Park will be transformed into a state-of-the-art fossil theme park.

The park will feature an immersive experience, including a light and sound show narrating the history of Earth. Plans also include a geological museum displaying rare specimens and index fossils from around the world.

Additionally, the Sikkim government aims to create a geopark village that will serve as a hub for research, attracting scientists and tourists alike.

"The site will be developed into a cutting-edge fossil theme park," Tamang said.

The park's development is expected to enhance Sikkim’s reputation in geology and palaeontology, making it a site of international significance.
