Six people lost their lives, and 28 others sustained injuries in a devastating head-on collision between two private buses in Tamil Nadu’s Tenkasi district on Monday.
According to police, the accident occurred when a private bus travelling from Madurai to Senkottai collided head-on with another private bus that was heading from Tenkasi towards Kovilpatti. The force of the impact left both vehicles severely mangled, scattering debris across the road and prompting an immediate large-scale rescue operation involving local authorities and firefighters.
A senior police officer speaking to national media revealed that preliminary investigations point to reckless driving by one of the buses. “Investigators believe speeding and negligent driving by the Keysar bus driver caused the crash,” officials said, specifying that the Keysar bus was the one travelling from Madurai to Senkottai.
All 28 injured passengers were promptly shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Health officials present at the scene informed reporters that the condition of some of the victims remains serious, and they cautioned that the death toll is likely to increase in the coming hours.
Authorities have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the incident. Police teams are examining available CCTV footage from the route as well as collecting eyewitness accounts to ascertain the exact sequence of events and fix responsibility. Further updates are awaited as the probe continues.
