Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the potential of waterways as the most economical mode of transport during a conference of the Inland Waterways Authority of India, under the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways in Dimapur on Monday.
"Waterways are the cheapest mode of transportation. We must fully utilise our water resources by building infrastructure along water bodies and establishing maritime skill development centres," Sonowal said.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio urged Nagaland's citizens to support the vision of a developed nation.
"Ports, shipping, and waterways are new initiatives for the state. We must step out of our comfort zones and participate in these ventures," Rio said.
The conference also led to talks regarding new initiatives in the sector, which promise to bring prosperity to Nagaland.
Plans include developing the Tizu Zunki River (NW-101) for cargo and passenger transport and enhancing the Doyang River Lake with community jetties and Ro-Pax ferries to boost tourism.
Additionally, opportunities for the region's youth will expand with skill training at the Maritime Skill Development Centre in Guwahati.
