Srinagar is poised to host its inaugural mega international marathon on Sunday, featuring over 2,000 participants, including 59 international athletes, competing in a full 42 km and a half marathon of 21 km.
Tourism Director Raja Yaqoob Farooq announced the exciting news, stating, "For the very first time, there are more than 2,000 registrations for the marathon."
He highlighted the diverse representation, with athletes hailing from 29 Union Territories and 13 countries.
Farooq added, "This marathon will send a message across the globe that Kashmir is peaceful."
The event aims to showcase the region's unique culture, including its renowned cuisine, paper maché crafts, and pashmina textiles.
"All these athletes will be our brand ambassadors," he said, underscoring the positive narrative they will carry back to their home countries.
A Danish athlete, participating for the first time in Kashmir, expressed enthusiasm about her experience, stating, "I love the surroundings of Srinagar. The people and food are amazing. It would be a great experience to run here." Sunita, representing the 45 elite Indian athletes, echoed similar sentiments, noting
the remarkable hospitality: "We have been told that the tourism department would take the athletes on a tour to Gulmarg."
The marathon will be flagged off by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at 6:15 am from Polo View Srinagar.
As the first major event organised by the newly elected government, it reflects Abdullah's passion for running and the administration's commitment to enhancing Kashmir's reputation as a hub for adventure sports.
With its immense potential, Kashmir is on track to become India's adventure sports capital.
