Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir, has received official recognition as a 'World Craft City' from the World Crafts Council.
This recognition is expected to enhance the handloom and handicraft sector, which will have positive impacts on tourism and infrastructure development.
"This prestigious honour underscores the city's rich heritage and the exceptional skills of its artisans whose dedication and artistry have earned global acclaim," the spokesperson said Sunday evening.
Jammu and Kashmir's Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said this recognition is evidence of the artisans' dedication and exceptional skills, underscoring Srinagar's cultural wealth.
"We are committed to supporting our artisans and ensuring that this accolade translates into tangible benefits for the community," he said.
Sinha mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently supported the handicraft and handloom sector in Jammu and Kashmir.
The designation as a 'World Craft City' will bring about a significant impact on the growth, sustainability, and innovation of the handloom and handicraft sector.
With increased global recognition, the crafts of Srinagar will receive greater exposure on the world stage, creating new markets and opportunities for artisans, according to the spokesperson.
The recognition is also expected to notably benefit tourism in Srinagar. The city anticipates attracting more tourists interested in its cultural and craft heritage, offering them immersive experiences within the lively artisan communities.
