Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday inaugurated the In-Patient Department (IPD) services at the Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialties (AIMSS) located in Chamiyana near Shimla.
To ease the patient burden at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, several specialised departments—Gastroenterology, Neurology, Endocrinology, Nephrology, Urology, and Plastic Surgery—have been relocated from IGMC to the new super specialty hospital. The departments of Cardiology and Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery (CTVS) are expected to be shifted within the next two months.
During his visit, the Chief Minister reviewed facilities on-site and directed officials to ensure the delivery of quality healthcare services. He held a meeting with staff on campus, seeking feedback on patient care and issuing instructions for further improvement.
CM Sukhu also instructed the Public Works Department to improve the approach road to the hospital and assured that transport services would be enhanced for the convenience of patients.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to public healthcare, the Chief Minister noted that although construction of the hospital had been pending for some time, the current administration had expedited its completion by sanctioning ₹23 crore from state resources.
The AIMSS Chamiyana is designed to accommodate 337 beds and is equipped with advanced operation theatres and a cath lab. While services have only recently begun, the facility is expected to become fully operational within six months, the CM added.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the state government is actively upgrading Chamiyana Hospital along with all medical colleges, zonal, and regional hospitals by incorporating modern technology to provide world-class healthcare within Himachal Pradesh. This, he noted, would help patients save both time and money by reducing the need to travel outside the state for treatment.
Chamiyana is set to become the first hospital in Himachal Pradesh to offer robotic surgery, followed by Tanda Medical College. Additionally, high-end 3 Tesla MRI machines will soon be installed in the medical colleges of Tanda, Hamirpur, and Nerchowk to enhance diagnostic services. The outdated 19-year-old MRI machine at IGMC Shimla is also being replaced as part of this technological upgrade.
“We are investing ₹200 crore to implement modern technology across hospitals in the state and are committed to transforming our medical services to meet global standards,” said the Chief Minister.
