In a major development following the arrest of Gagandeep Singh, alias Gagan, for allegedly leaking sensitive information to Pakistani intelligence, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Abhimanyu Rana on Tuesday revealed that the accused was “activated” during Operation Sindoor to share classified details about the Indian Army movements with Pakistani intelligence officers.
The Tarn Taran resident, who has reportedly been in touch with Pakistani intelligence officers for the past five years, was arrested earlier today. His primary handler is said to be Gopal Singh Chawla, a known Khalistani operative based in Pakistan.
"Investigating the same, a team of police carried out an operation and recovered two mobile phones in which, contact numbers of over 20 Pakistani officers were present, and he had also initiated talks with Gopal Singh Chawla. He (Gagan) has been in touch with Pakistani intelligence officers for 5 years..." SSP Rana said.
“When Operation Sindoor began, Gagan was reactivated to share information about Army deployments. After checking his phone, it was confirmed that he was transmitting photos and videos of military activity to his Pakistani handlers,” said Rana. “His passport was issued in 2018, and we are probing whether he traveled abroad or to Pakistan.”
SSP Rana said, "According to the details of his accounts, it was found that money was transferred to his account from a foreign country 7-8 times... His activity had increased over the past 3 months... We are trying to know if he was working as a sleeper cell... FIR has been registered against him under the Official Secrets Act, and his remand will be taken today, and further investigation will be conducted... He was a drug addict, but we will investigate if he was also getting consignments (from Pakistan)."
An FIR has been registered under the Official Secrets Act, and Gagan’s police remand is being sought for further questioning.
Earlier, Punjab DGP had posted on X (formerly Twitter) confirming Gagan’s links with Pakistan’s ISI and Khalistani networks, stating he shared classified inputs during India’s counter-terror Operation Sindoor. The operation, launched on May 7, was India’s military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives. Over 100 terrorists linked to groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen were eliminated in retaliatory strikes across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
