In a significant medical breakthrough, doctors at Govind Ballabh Pant Medical College and Hospital in Tripura have successfully performed a kidney transplant on a 20-year-old man.
The six-and-a-half-hour surgery, led by Medical Superintendent Sankar Chakraborty, saw Munna Saha Sutradhar donating a kidney to his son, Subham Sutradhar.
"We recently established an MoU with Manipur's Shija Hospital, whose mentorship was crucial for the successful transplantation," Chakraborty informed the media.
Chief Minister Manik Saha, an oral and maxillo-facial surgeon, personally oversaw the MoU processes related to the kidney transplant, highlighting the legal complexities involved.
"All necessary procedures were meticulously followed, including securing mentorship from Shija Hospitals in Manipur, who provided invaluable technical support," Chakraborty elaborated.
During a recent public interaction, the patient and his parents met Chief Minister Saha, prompting swift action by the medical team.
Gulliver Potsangbam, a nephrologist from Shija Hospitals, led a 13-member surgical team through the operation, marking the hospital's 114th successful kidney transplant.
Chief Minister Saha praised the achievement, stating, "Today's success is a testament to our state's advancing medical capabilities, thanks to concerted efforts to enhance healthcare services. My heartfelt congratulations to the medical team, and I wish both donor and recipient a speedy recovery."
