Tripura's famed Queen Pineapple is poised to make its mark on international markets as the state government gears up to export 30 metric tons to Holland and 5 metric tons to Dubai.
With the Queen Pineapple of Tripura securing a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, courtesy of the North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC), its recognition as the state fruit by former President Ram Nath Kovind further solidified its stature.
Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the export plans while overseeing the dispatch of 600 kg of Queen Pineapple bound for Oman.
"In collaboration with NERAMAC, SIMPET, and the State government, 600 kgs of Queen Pineapple from Tripura have already been exported to Oman. Negotiations are underway for exports to Dubai, approximately 30 metric tons to Holland," Minister Nath revealed.
Since the BJP came into power in 2018, Tripura has successfully exported Queen Pineapples to Dubai, Qatar, and Bangladesh, totaling 33 metric tons internationally and 12,500 metric tons to other Indian states, ensuring fair prices for farmers.
"We've also exported other products grown in our state, including 4.4 metric tons of jackfruits, 257 metric tons of wood apple, 397 metric tons of tamarind, 74 metric tons of ginger, and 70 metric tons of betel leaf to various foreign countries and states," Nath added.
Before 2018, pineapple cultivation in Tripura covered 595 hectares, expanding to 5,654 hectares thereafter, indicating significant growth in the industry.
The Queen Pineapple, known for its golden yellow color and sweet aroma, is harvested from mid-May to mid-July. Weighing between 600-800 grams, its juice is bright yellow with TSS ranging from 10 to 14 Brix.
This export initiative not only benefits farmers, providing them with higher returns (Rs. 32 per piece compared to the market price of Rs. 18), but also contributes to the state's agricultural growth and international recognition.
