Tripura’s traditional indigenous attire ‘risa’ gets GI tag

The recognition of the 'risa' with a GI tag is expected to open new avenues for its promotion and preservation, further cementing its place in Tripura's cultural heritage.

‘RISA’, the traditional attire from Tripura, has been accorded the Geographical Indication (GI) registration, commonly known as GI tag.

Tripura's iconic indigenous attire, the 'risa,' has been granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, announced Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Sunday. The Killa Mahila Cluster of Gomati district, promoted by the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM), obtained the prestigious tag, marking a significant milestone for the traditional garment.

In a social media post, Chief Minister Saha congratulated the artisans, particularly those from the Killa Mahila Cluster, on the achievement. The recognition is expected to elevate the international profile of the 'Tripura Risa' and boost its demand and value.

"Many agencies are helping self-help groups (SHGs) to make Risa, which has a heritage value. Recently, we in association with NABARD applied for the GI tag for Risa, and ultimately it got the recognition. This will help in increasing its demand and price," said Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission's (TRLM) former CEO Prasada Rao, who had been a key figure behind the initiative to get the tag.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, Tripura's government has actively promoted the risa as a symbol of the state's identity since 2018. The garment, comprising three parts - risa, rignai, and rikutu, holds cultural significance and is deeply rooted in Tripuri tradition.

Risa, primarily worn as an upper garment, is also used as headgear, a stole, or a token of respect. The handwoven cloth remains integral to Tripuri households, preserving a centuries-old tradition.

The complete Tripuri attire, dating back to the era of the Manikya kings, is woven with intricate designs and serves various social and religious purposes. Adolescent girls undergo a traditional ritual, Risa Sormani, marking their transition into womanhood.

The risa is a symbol of pride and identity for the 19 indigenous tribal communities of Tripura, each contributing unique designs to the vibrant fabric.

The recognition of the 'risa' with a GI tag is expected to open new avenues for its promotion and preservation, further cementing its place in Tripura's cultural heritage.
