Teachers in Tripura wear black badges and stand in solidarity, demanding justice for their colleague Abhijeet Dey, who was brutally killed by a mob alleging molestation.

Teachers across Tripura donned black badges on Monday in a powerful show of solidarity, protesting the alleged brutal killing of Abhijeet Dey, an English teacher, in Udaipur’s Poultry Road area under Gomati district.

The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the state’s educational community, igniting calls for justice and accountability.

Dey, a respected teacher, was allegedly beaten to death on August 8 by local ruling party leader Shankar Karmakar and his associates. The attack reportedly followed accusations of misconduct made by a student.

The Tripura TET Teachers’ Welfare Association (TTTWA), leading the protests, has condemned the killing in the strongest terms, demanding stringent punishment for those responsible.

“The entire teaching community is shaken by this horrific incident. We will not rest until justice is served, and the offender is given the maximum punishment,” the TTTWA stated in a social media post.

The association’s members, along with teachers from various government and government-aided schools, have expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stressing the need for swift legal action.

Eyewitnesses claim that Dey was ambushed at Karmakar’s residence, where he had gone for a private teaching session. “They were waiting for him, and he was mercilessly beaten,” said a source who wished to remain anonymous.

Despite his injuries, it is alleged that police failed to provide Dey with immediate medical assistance after taking him into custody. The situation deteriorated when Dey collapsed and began vomiting blood in court the following day.

Dey was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries on Saturday. Controversy now surrounds the handling of his body, which was released without a post-mortem examination despite visible signs of trauma.

Dey’s wife has accused Karmakar of premeditating the attack and has questioned the validity of the misconduct allegations against her husband.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with locals demanding severe punishment for those involved. The police are also facing criticism for their perceived inaction and mishandling of the case. “This is an abuse of power that must not go unpunished,” said a local activist.

Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, who is also the local MLA, condemned the attack, stating that taking the law into one’s own hands is a crime. He assured that the police would take legal action against the culprits.
