Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami has directed state authorities to conduct a thorough verification of illegal madrassas in the state. Following these instructions, the Uttarakhand police headquarters (PHQ) has issued letters to district police units to identify such madrassas and investigate their funding sources.
The police have begun the first phase of verification, where Local Intelligence Units (LIUs) in each district will gather information to identify illegal madrassas and track their funding.
Within a month, district-level police will compile a list of findings and submit it to the PHQ. The compiled data will then be forwarded to the minority affairs department for further action.
Focus on registration and funding
Uttarakhand has around 415 registered madrassas, educating approximately 50,000 students, according to the state madrassa board.
The verification drive aims to distinguish registered madrassas from unregistered or illegal ones, while also scrutinising their funding sources and the enrollment of students from outside the state.
Additional Director General of Police (Administration) AP Anshuman stated, "As per the government's directions, appropriate steps are being taken. Communication with district police units is underway to implement these measures effectively."
Earlier, the police conducted a detailed probe into all madrassas in the state, focusing on three key areas: their registration status, sources of funding, and details of students from other states.
These efforts align with CM Pushkar Dhami's initiative to closely monitor madrassa activities in Uttarakhand.
This verification drive underscores the state's commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in madrassa operations while addressing concerns about illegal madrassas and their funding.
