Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced on Monday that saints, seers, and other religious leaders will be allowed to construct permanent ashrams in Ujjain, similar to those in Haridwar.
Speaking at a press conference about preparations for the 2028 Simhastha Mela, Yadav highlighted the state's plans to prioritise facilities for religious figures in the holy city.
"Ujjain is known for saints. Simhastha Mela, held once every 12 years, will be organised in 2028. Sadhus and saints need a proper space for lodging and other activities in the city. Considering this, the state government has plans to build permanent ashrams by giving top priority to saints," Yadav said.
He explained that like Haridwar's facilities for religious leaders, Ujjain would see the construction of permanent ashrams, with the Ujjain Development Authority spearheading the initiative.
"Saints, seers, heads of Akharas, and other religious leaders can invite everyone and work towards building their ashram," Yadav added.
The chief minister also emphasised the broader development efforts in Ujjain ahead of the Simhastha Mela. "A plan has been prepared with the help of public representatives to develop Ujjain as a religious destination like Haridwar," he noted.
Yadav detailed infrastructure improvements, including the construction of four-lane and six-lane bridges, roads, and basic facilities like electricity and drinking water.
"Priority will also be given to setting up Dharamshalas, medical centres, and Ayurveda centres through interested devotees," he said, adding that saints would be granted permission to build ashrams with adequate parking facilities.
The chief minister also provided updates on transportation projects, stating, "The tender process for the Ujjain-Indore six-lane highway is over, and the foundation stone for the Ujjain-Jaora Green Field Four Lane Road will be laid soon."
He further announced that an in-principle approval has been given for the operation of the Indore-Ujjain Metro train and that a Vande Metro service would connect Ujjain, Dewas, Fatehabad, and Indore.
"All railway routes in Ujjain are being strengthened, and the existing airstrip will also be upgraded to an airport," Yadav concluded.
