Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) chief Farooq Abdullah on Monday strongly criticised the Waqf (Amendment) Act, calling it a violation of the Constitution.

Addressing reporters, Abdullah defended the decision of the Speaker in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly to disallow open discussion on the amended law, explaining that the matter is currently under consideration by the Supreme Court. He stated that since the issue is sub judice, any discussion on it should be withheld until the apex court delivers its verdict.

He further accused the Opposition of engaging in baseless criticism rather than constructive debate, describing their stance as opposition for the sake of opposition.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on April 2 and 3, respectively, and passed by both Houses. It subsequently received the President’s assent on April 5, officially becoming law.

The amendments have sparked controversy and legal challenges, prompting heightened political tensions, particularly in regions like Jammu and Kashmir.

In a separate remark, Abdullah also commented on the Saudi Arabian government’s recent decision to temporarily suspend the issuance of new short-term visas to citizens of 14 countries, including India.

He expressed concern over the move, particularly in the context of the upcoming Hajj season and the potential impact on employment opportunities for Indians in the Gulf nation. He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to engage directly with Saudi leaders and request them not to reduce India’s Hajj quota or restrict visa issuance.

Abdullah also mentioned that he would ask Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, to write to the Prime Minister regarding the issue.

Saudi Arabia’s decision, which affects countries such as India, Pakistan, and Egypt, is aimed at streamlining travel ahead of the Hajj pilgrimage but has caused apprehension among those planning to travel and work there in the coming months.
