Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday described the recent amendment to the Waqf Act as part of a larger movement towards reclaiming India’s civilisational roots in a bold and unapologetic manner.

He also lauded Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his unwavering resolve and credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for ushering in a transformative era in the country. Taking to social media platform 'X', Sarma highlighted the significance of the amendment and linked it to other major legislative measures undertaken by the government.

In his post, Sarma remarked that Home Minister Amit Shah had demonstrated exceptional courage and determination in shaping the vision of a New India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He asserted that this amendment was not an isolated move but part of a broader strategy to reaffirm India’s cultural and historical identity.

Citing key legislative decisions taken by the government, he mentioned the abrogation of Article 370, the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the abolition of Triple Talaq, and the steps towards implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He emphasized that the amendment to the Waqf Act was yet another milestone in this journey.

Sarma further stated that India is rising with newfound cultural confidence and is moving forward with clarity, courage, and conviction. His comments reflect a broader ideological stance of the ruling dispensation, which has consistently positioned itself as a force working towards redefining India’s socio-political landscape in line with its historical and civilisational ethos.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, was passed in the Lok Sabha on Thursday following a marathon debate that lasted over 12 hours. The ruling NDA defended the legislation, presenting it as beneficial for minority communities, while the opposition strongly criticized it, labeling it as "anti-Muslim."

The passage of the bill has sparked intense political debate, with both sides offering contrasting narratives on its implications for governance, minority rights, and India's broader legal framework.
