The picturesque villages of Wayanad in Kerala are now dotted with destroyed houses, swollen water bodies, and broken branches of uprooted trees following massive landslides on Tuesday.
Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha, once known for their beauty, are now shrouded in gloom after being hit by landslides, isolating them from other areas.
Vehicles swept away in floodwaters are visible, some stuck in tree trunks and submerged in various locations.
Swollen water bodies have altered their course, now flowing through inhabited areas and causing more destruction.
Large boulders have rolled down the hills, obstructing the path of rescue workers.
Despite heavy rains, rescue workers could be seen transferring the deceased and the injured to ambulances.
In many places, the affected villages took on a desert-like appearance as mass uprooting of trees caused by landslides and floodwaters washed away the green patches.
Authorities said that 23 people, including children, were confirmed to have died in the landslides that struck the hilly Wayanad district on Tuesday.
Four people, including a child, lost their lives in the Chooralmala town of the district, while a one-year-old child from Nepal died in Thondernad village, as reported by Wayanad district authorities.
Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha villages were among the areas affected and cut off by the landslides, as per the authorities.
