The union cabinet headed by PM Narendra Modi, has approved the extensive PRITHvi VIgyan scheme under the ministry of earth sciences. The implmentation of which spans from 2021 till 2026 at a financial outlay of Rs. 4,797 crore.
The scheme comprises of over five sub-schemes namely, Atmosphere & Climate Research-Modelling Observing Systems & Services (ACROSS), Ocean Services, Modelling Application, Resources and Technology (O-SMART), Polar Science and Cryosphere Research (PACER), Seismology and Geosciences (SAGE) and Research, Education, Training and Outreach (REACHOUT).
Union minister of road, transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari recently posted on X expressing,"This pioneering scheme is poised to comprehensively tackle all five components of the Earth system, aiming to elevate the understanding of Earth System Sciences to new heights"
The scheme outlines various objectives such as long-term observation of the atmosphere, ocean, geosphere, cryosphere and solid earth. Moreover, development of modelling systems for comprehending and predicting weather, climate hazards etc. The scheme enlarges the vision of exploration of polar and high seas regions of the earth as well.
Additionally, the scheme comes with the promise of development of technology for exploration and sustainable harnessing of oceanic resources for societal applications. It also offers to translate knowledge into services for societal, environmental and economic benefits.
The ministry of earth sciences comprehensively tackles all aspects related to Earth sciences. PRITHvi aims to systematically emcompass all the five components of earth system, namely, atomosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, cryosphere and biospehere and their complex interactions.
The scheme aims to unite diverse earth science research efforts across MoES institutes, addressing challenges in weather, climate, oceans, cryosphere, and seismology. In addition, this initiative also explores sustainable use of living and non-living resources
