Gartner Report: 75% of enterprise engineers to use AI code assistants by 2028

A recent report released on Thursday predicts a significant surge in the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) code assistants among enterprise software engineers by 2028.

The report, conducted by Gartner, forecasts that approximately 75 per cent of these engineers will utilize AI code assistants, a stark increase from the less than 10 per cent recorded in early 2023.

Gartner's research indicates that currently, about 63 per cent of organizations globally are either piloting, deploying, or have already integrated AI code assistants into their operations.

Philip Walsh, Senior Principal Analyst at Gartner, emphasizes the importance for software engineering leaders to evaluate the return on investment (ROI) and develop a solid business case as they expand the implementation of AI code assistants.

“Software engineering leaders must determine ROI and build a business case as they scale their rollouts of AI code assistants,” said Philip Walsh, Senior Principal Analyst at Gartner.

“However, traditional ROI frameworks steer engineering leaders toward metrics centred on cost reduction. This narrow perspective fails to capture the full value of AI code assistants,” he added.

The report, based on a survey of 598 global respondents conducted in the third quarter of 2023, says that AI code assistants enhance developers’ efficiency by stimulating brainstorming and increasing code quality enhancements which empower developers to continuously upskill and build proficiency across programming frameworks.

Moreover, these assistants contribute to higher job satisfaction and retention rates, ultimately saving costs associated with turnover.

Walsh advises software engineering leaders to articulate the comprehensive value proposition of AI code assistants by linking value enablers to their impacts and analyzing the overall organizational return. This strategic approach ensures a nuanced understanding of the benefits these assistants bring to enterprises.
