India is set to take a significant leap in satellite technology with the upcoming launch of the GSAT-20 satellite, developed by ISRO, in collaboration with SpaceX.
This marks the first commercial partnership between the Indian space agency and Elon Musk's aerospace company, showcasing an important step in strengthening technological ties. The satellite will be launched on a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, USA, early next week.
GSAT-20 is designed to provide robust internet services across India, with a special focus on regions that currently lack reliable connectivity. The satellite is equipped with advanced Ka-band transponders and a multi-beam architecture, enabling efficient frequency reuse.
This design ensures enhanced broadband services and supports a large number of users through small user terminals. It will also introduce in-flight internet connectivity, a feature eagerly anticipated by frequent travellers.
Weighing 4,700 kg, the GSAT-20 is too heavy for India’s indigenous rockets, which led to the selection of SpaceX for its launch. The mission's cost is estimated to range between $60-70 million.
Once operational, GSAT-20 is expected to have a lifespan of 14 years, during which it will provide critical internet services, especially in remote and underserved areas.
It will utilise 32 user beams, including eight dedicated to the northeastern region and 24 covering the rest of India. Ground hub stations located on the mainland will further aid in its operations.
ISRO Chairman S. Somanath confirmed the collaboration during a media interaction in August, revealing that the satellite had been shipped to the U.S. for its launch preparation.
He also discussed the future plans of the agency, including designs for upcoming moon missions, Chandrayaan-4 and Chandrayaan-5, which are awaiting government approval.
This partnership comes at a time when SpaceX is also lobbying for its Starlink satellite internet service to gain approval in India. The development underlines a growing alignment between India and SpaceX in the realm of space exploration and technology.
