OpenAI's ChatGPT is testing new 'Memory' feature with select users

Privacy and safety considerations are paramount with this new feature. OpenAI ensures that ChatGPT will not remember sensitive information by default, such as details about the user’s health. However, users can explicitly instruct the chatbot to remember such details if needed.

OpenAI's ChatGPT, one of the most widely used AI-driven chatbots, is currently undergoing trials for a new 'Memory' function feature.

This addition aims to revolutionize user interaction by integrating memory capabilities, allowing the chatbot to retain previous conversations. Importantly, users retain complete control over this feature, determining what is stored and how it's applied.

The Memory feature is currently in the testing phase with a select group of ChatGPT's free and Plus subscribers.

This trial period is crucial for assessing its utility and efficacy before a broader implementation. OpenAI has assured its users that plans for wider availability will be shared shortly.

In a recent blog post, the company stated, "We’re testing memory with ChatGPT, remembering things you discuss across all chats saves you from having to repeat information and makes future conversations more helpful. You're in control of ChatGPT's memory."

Users will have the flexibility to manage their preferences regarding memory usage effortlessly. They can deactivate the feature at any time, selectively erase specific information, review and delete memories individually, or clear all memories entirely via the settings menu.

During interactions with ChatGPT, users can instruct the chatbot to remember specific details or provide instructions for future tasks. With the Memory feature enabled, ChatGPT will retain these details and improve its performance over time.

For instance, users can ask ChatGPT to summarize texts in limited words and provide bullet points, and it will consistently deliver summaries in the requested format.

Further, OpenAI plans to extend memory controls to custom GPTs in the coming weeks. GPT builders will have the option to enable memory on each individual GPT, with separate memory storage for each instance.

Privacy and safety considerations are paramount with this new feature. OpenAI ensures that ChatGPT will not remember sensitive information by default, such as details about the user’s health. However, users can explicitly instruct the chatbot to remember such details if needed.

It's important to note that memories stored with ChatGPT are not limited to a single conversation, and deleting a chat does not erase the memory collected. However, users can opt for temporary chats if they prefer not to utilize memories for specific conversations.
