In a proactive move to address the surge in vehicle thefts, particularly targeting two-wheelers, law enforcement authorities announced a cutting-edge technology aimed at swiftly confirming vehicle ownership. 

 

Rolled out as part of the ambitious 'Safe City Project', this initiative entails the installation of approximately 5,250 cameras across the city, representing an investment of 165 crore.

 

The newly deployed portable cameras boast advanced capabilities, allowing them to efficiently scan vehicle number plates and automatically identify registration numbers.

 

These details are then cross-referenced with a meticulously maintained database housed at the command and control center situated at GCP headquarters in Vepery.

 

This database comprises extensive information concerning stolen vehicles and those implicated in serious offenses.

 

Upon detecting a match, the system promptly dispatches alerts to officers stationed throughout the city.

 

Equipped with portable and mobile cameras, law enforcement personnel can swiftly screen vehicles, enabling timely intervention. Sadasivam, assistant commissioner of police in Old Washermenpet, where the pilot phase of the project was initiated.

 

Currently undergoing trial, the initiative concentrates on areas witnessing a notable increase in two-wheeler thefts, with plans for subsequent expansion to additional locales.
