President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the nation's maiden home-grown gene therapy for cancer at IIT Bombay on Thursday.
Addressing the gathering, President Murmu hailed the launch of India's pioneering gene therapy as a monumental advancement in the battle against cancer.
"Dubbed 'CAR-T cell therapy' this accessible and cost-effective treatment offers renewed hope to humanity" she said while expressing optimism about its potential to save numerous lives.
President Murmu said, "Its status is a remarkable achievement in medical science, while this treatment has been available in developed nations for some time, its exorbitant costs have rendered it inaccessible to most patients worldwide"
She emphasized that the therapy announced today stands out as the world's most affordable CAR-T cell therapy, symbolizing India's commitment to self-reliance through initiatives like 'Make in India.'
The President commended the collaboration between the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, Tata Memorial Hospital, and industry partner ImmunoACT in developing India's inaugural CAR-T cell therapy.
This collaborative effort, she noted, exemplifies the synergy between academia and industry, serving as a source of inspiration for future endeavors in this domain.
President Murmu also lauded IIT Bombay's esteemed reputation as a global leader in technology education.
"The development of CAR-T cell therapy not only harnesses technology for the betterment of humanity but also exemplifies successful partnerships between distinguished academic institutions and industry", she added.
This achievement, she attributed to IIT Bombay's focus on research and development over the past three decades, foreseeing substantial benefits for India from the ongoing technological revolution, driven by the knowledge and skills of institutions like IIT Bombay.
