UPSC adds fingerprint, facial recognition for verification

By leveraging the extensive Aadhaar database, the UPSC intends to cross-check the biometric details of candidates. During the online registration process, applicants will submit their fingerprints and photographs, which will be matched against the data on the exam day. UPSC adds fingerprint, facial recognition for verification

In response to recent controversies, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is set to revolutionise its examination security measures by integrating cutting-edge technology.

The move comes after the scandal involving Puja Khedkar, a trainee IAS officer accused of falsifying documents to exceed the permitted number of Civil Services Examination (CSE) attempts.

To ensure the integrity of its examinations, the UPSC has rolled out plans to implement Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication, facial recognition systems, and AI-driven CCTV surveillance.

These advanced solutions aim to eliminate the rampant cheating and fraud that have plagued examinations like NEET.

At the heart of this technological overhaul is the Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication system.

By leveraging the extensive Aadhaar database, the UPSC intends to cross-check the biometric details of candidates. During the online registration process, applicants will submit their fingerprints and photographs, which will be matched against the data on the exam day. This step is crucial in preventing impersonation and ensuring that only registered candidates can sit for the exams.

Complementing the fingerprint authentication, facial recognition systems will be deployed at examination centers.

High-resolution cameras and sophisticated software will analyze the facial features of candidates, matching them with the images submitted during registration.

AI-driven closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance will also be installed in examination halls.

These advanced systems will not only record but also analyze footage in real-time, identifying suspicious behavior patterns.

The AI algorithms are designed to detect anomalies such as unusual movements or interactions, instantly alerting authorities to potential instances of cheating or collusion.

The UPSC's initiative follows a series of lapses reported during the NEET 2024 examinations, where widespread allegations of cheating prompted a reevaluation of security protocols.

The UPSC issued a tender on June 20, inviting public sector undertakings (PSUs) to submit bids for revamping the examination process.
