OYO has introduced a new check-in policy prohibiting unmarried couples at its partner hotels, starting in Meerut. The revised policy requires proof of relationship for couples and empowers hotels to decline bookings based on local sensibilities.

Marking a significant policy shift, OYO has introduced a new check-in rule for its partner hotels, which prohibits unmarried couples from checking in.

The revised guidelines, which came into effect this year, have initially been rolled out in Meerut, with the possibility of expanding to other cities based on feedback.

Under the new policy, couples will be required to present valid proof of their relationship at check-in, including for online bookings. OYO has also empowered its partner hotels to exercise discretion and decline bookings from couples based on local social sensibilities.

"OYO has received feedback in the past from civil society groups especially in Meerut urging action to address this issue. Additionally, residents from a few other cities have petitioned for disallowing unmarried couples to check-in at OYO hotels," people familiar with the matter said.

Pawas Sharma, Region Head of OYO North India said, "OYO is committed to upholding safe and responsible hospitality practices.

While we respect individual freedoms and personal liberty, we also recognise our responsibility to listen to and work with the law enforcement and civil society groups in the micro markets we operate in. We will continue to review this policy and its impact periodically."

The move forms part of OYO’s broader initiative to reshape its brand identity by providing a safe environment for families, students, business travellers, and religious or solo guests.

It aims to change outdated perceptions and encourage longer stays and repeat bookings, boosting customer trust and loyalty.

As part of this programme, OYO has been conducting pan-India initiatives, including joint seminars with police and hotel partners on safe hospitality. The company has also blacklisted hotels reported for promoting immoral activities and is taking action against unauthorised hotels misusing OYO’s branding.
