UGC declares MPhil degrees invalid, warns universities against admissions

Commission urges immediate halt to MPhil admissions for 2023-24 academic year

- Srinagar - UPDATED: December 27, 2023, 03:30 PM - 2 min read

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has declared MPhil degrees invalid, citing clause 14 of its regulations. The move comes in response to complaints about certain universities inviting fresh applications for MPhil programs, despite the UGC's directive.

In a notification, UGC Secretary Manish Joshi stated that “MPhil degree is not recognized, as per Regulation No. 14 of the UGC Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree Regulations 2022.” The notification also emphasises that higher educational institutions should not offer MPhil programs urging them to stop offering admissions in the program for upcoming academic year 2023-24.

The UGC has framed regulations, published in the Gazette of India on November 7, 2022, reinforcing the directive. Secretary UGC advised students “not to enrol in any such program, as notification clearly states that MPhil degrees at all universities will no longer be valid.”

The proactive measure is part of the UGC's commitment to align with the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022. ‘All university authorities across states and Union Territories must implement the 2022 UGC policy to avoid offering MPhil admissions, ensuring compliance with the Commission's regulations.’

The UGC's stance underscores its dedication to maintaining high standards in academic degrees and ensuring clarity regarding the recognition of qualifications offered by higher educational institutions.
