Bihar Assembly Election

'Mahila Shakti' powers NDA win; RJD haunted by women's anguish

In the week women rewrote Bihar's political map, the RJD was forced to confront a crisis written by its own daughters, a contradiction far more damaging than its electoral defeat.

Rohini Acharya announced her exit from politics and said she was "disowning" her family.

In a week when women emerged as the most decisive force in Bihar’s politics, the most jarring story did not come from the campaign trail. It came from inside the home of the state’s most recognisable political dynasty.

As the NDA celebrated a historic sweep powered by record female turnout—the much-touted “mahila wave”—Lalu Prasad Yadav’s family was plunged into turmoil. And the turmoil was led not by its political sons, but by its anguished daughters.

At the very moment the BJP-JD(U) alliance was flaunting its women-first governance model, a daughter of the Yadav household alleged that she had been insulted, humiliated, and compelled to leave the family home. Within hours, three more sisters quietly followed her out. The irony could not have been more dramatic, or more politically damaging.

The implosion erupted immediately after the RJD’s electoral collapse. On the night the party’s tally crashed from 75 seats to around 25, Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter Rohini Acharya—a doctor who has often served as the family’s emotional anchor—shockingly announced that she was quitting politics and stepping away from the family altogether.

Her posts on X were raw, unfiltered, and deeply personal. Rohini wrote of being overwhelmed, of facing words and actions that shook her to the core, and of being driven to the point where she felt she had no choice but to leave her parents’ home. She spoke of the unbearable pain this decision caused her mother and father, and of the distress of being hit by accusations she described as profoundly unjust—especially after she had donated a kidney to save her father’s life.

She wrote that she had been “torn away from her family,” that she had left her parents “crying,” and that she was accused of having “taken crores” in exchange for donating a kidney to Lalu Yadav—a claim she called deeply insulting and utterly false.

She also made it clear that the confrontation had stemmed from tensions involving two of Tejashwi Yadav’s closest aides. Their continued silence in the aftermath has only fuelled speculation about who truly holds influence around Tejashwi at a time when the party is at its most vulnerable.

“Yesterday, a daughter, a sister, a married woman, a mother was humiliated, filthy abuses were hurled at her, a slipper was raised to hit her. I did not compromise on my self-respect, I did not surrender the truth, and solely because of this, I had to endure this insult,” Rohini wrote in one of her posts on X.

“A daughter, out of compulsion, left behind her crying parents and sisters and came away; they tore me away from my maternal home… They left me orphaned,” she added in another.

For both supporters and critics of the RJD, the moment was staggering: the very daughter who had for years steadied the Yadav family in its most difficult hours was walking away on the night of its worst electoral defeat in decades.
