Bihar Assembly Election

NDA sweeps Bihar elections, PM hails ‘victory of governance’

The NDA appeared on course for a sweeping victory in Bihar as counting progressed on Thursday, with the BJP emerging as the single largest party. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the verdict as a mandate for development, even as the INDIA bloc lagged far behind in early trends.

The National Democratic Alliance looked set for a commanding victory in the Bihar Assembly elections on Thursday, with latest trends placing the coalition ahead in 205 of the state’s 243 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party appeared poised to emerge as the single largest party as counting continued late into the evening.

The INDIA bloc trailed significantly across constituencies, with the ruling alliance tightening its grip as constituency-wise numbers steadily firmed up. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, responding to the early mandate, thanked voters for delivering what he described as an emphatic endorsement of the NDA’s governance record.

“Victory of good governance has been achieved. Victory of development has been achieved. Victory of the spirit of public welfare has been achieved. Victory of social justice has been achieved. My deepest gratitude to the family members of Bihar, who have blessed the NDA with a historic and unprecedented victory in the 2025 assembly elections,” he said in an X post.

The Prime Minister is expected to address BJP workers in Delhi later in the evening, as senior party leaders began gathering at the party headquarters ahead of his speech.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav urged vigilance at counting centres, warning against any procedural lapses. “Our party workers are alert and present at the counting centres. If any official tries to repeat the mistakes of 2020, crosses their limits, or acts on someone’s directions with malicious intent, the public will give a strong response,” he cautioned.

Polling for all 243 constituencies was conducted in two phases on 6 and 11 November. Bihar has 7.42 crore registered voters, including 3.92 crore men and 3.5 crore women. Turnout remained strong, with 65.08 per cent voting recorded in the first phase and 68.76 per cent in the second.

The opening phase, which covered 121 seats across 18 districts, registered the highest-ever turnout in the state’s electoral history at 64.66 per cent. Exit polls released on 12 November had already indicated a clear advantage for the NDA, projecting a comfortable lead over the Mahagathbandhan.
