Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and Mahagathbandhan Chief Ministerial candidate Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday unveiled a series of poll promises, including a Rs 50 lakh insurance cover and a pension scheme for panchayat representatives if the INDIA alliance comes to power in Bihar.
Addressing a press conference alongside Deputy Chief Ministerial candidate and Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) supremo Mukesh Sahani, Yadav said that his party would prioritise the welfare of grassroots representatives. He announced that the allowances for members of the panchayati raj system would be doubled.
“We want to make some announcements. The INDIA bloc, if voted to power, will double the allowances of representatives of Bihar's panchayati raj system. Pension and Rs 50 lakh insurance cover will be provided for representatives of Bihar's panchayati raj system,” Yadav said.
Apart from these measures, the RJD leader promised several benefits for public distributors in the state. He said the per-quintal margin money for distributors under the Public Distribution System (PDS) would be increased to ensure fair compensation for their work.
Yadav also announced an interest-free loan scheme worth Rs 5 lakh for barbers, carpenters, and potters, with a repayment period of five years. The move, he said, is aimed at empowering traditional occupations and providing financial stability to small-scale workers.

“If the INDIA bloc is voted to power, we will also substantially increase the margin money, per quintal, of distributors of the public distribution system (PDS) in the state. Besides, we will provide Rs 5 lakh interest-free loans to barbers, those engaged in the pottery business, and carpenters in the state,” Yadav told the press.
The initiative is expected to benefit several marginalised communities, including Lohar, Kumhar, and others, by helping them gain financial independence and stability.
Earlier, Yadav had promised that women working as 'Jeevika Didis' on a contractual basis would be made permanent if the INDIA alliance forms the government.
He said that their monthly salary would be increased to Rs 30,000, along with an additional monthly allowance of Rs 2,000 and insurance coverage worth Rs 5 lakh.
The announcements come as part of the INDIA alliance’s broader social welfare agenda aimed at empowering local representatives, workers, and women.
The 243-member Bihar Assembly will go to the polls in two phases on November 6 and November 11, with results scheduled to be announced on November 14.
