'Exercise caution in their public statements,' EC rebukes BJP's Dilip Ghosh, Congress' Supriya Shrinate

The Election Commission (EC) took a firm stance on Monday as it censured BJP leader Dilip Ghosh and Congress' Supriya Shrinate for their derogatory remarks against the dignity of women.

In a statement issued, the Commission expressed its conviction that both Ghosh and Shrinate had resorted to a low-level personal attack, thus violating the provisions of the Model Code of Conduct.

As a consequence, they have been cautioned to exercise caution in their public statements during the Model Code of Conduct period.

The EC has also decided to subject their election-related communications to special and additional monitoring, effective from Monday onwards.

Moreover, copies of the warning notice or censure have been dispatched to the respective party chiefs.

This move aims to sensitise their functionaries about the importance of careful communication in the public domain and to refrain from making derogatory comments or violating model code guidelines.

The controversy erupted when a contentious comment, allegedly made by Shrinate, surfaced on social media platforms targeting Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut, who is contesting as a BJP candidate from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Following widespread backlash, Shrinate removed the controversial remarks from all her social media accounts, asserting that they were posted by someone else with access to her accounts.

Meanwhile, Ghosh faced backlash after a video surfaced showing him mocking Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee's family background.

Subsequently, Ghosh issued an apology for his contentious remarks against the West Bengal Chief Minister.
