Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, delivered a scathing assessment of the Congress party's future in the state, asserting that by the year 2026, the grand old party would cease to exist in Assam.
Speaking to media persons in Biswanath, Sarma stressed the diminishing prospects of Congress, particularly under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, whose future he deemed 'dark'.
"Voting for the Congress party means voting for Rahul Gandhi; voting for the BJP means voting for Narendra Modi. Those who love Narendra Modi and believe that India will become Viswaguru will vote for the BJP in this election. Those who believe in the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, also know that their future is dark. Even Rahul Gandhi's future is also dark, and his followers' future is darker," CM Sarma said.
Sarma articulated a stark choice for voters, linking their decision to the fate of prominent leaders - voting for the BJP symbolised support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his vision of India as a global leader, while allegiance to Congress implied an endorsement of Rahul Gandhi and an uncertain future.
Highlighting recent defections from Congress to the BJP and AGP (Asom Gana Parishad), Sarma highlighted what he termed as a significant erosion of Congress's influence in the state.
He predicted the party's survival only in isolated pockets by 2026.
"In the last one and a half months, you have seen a big erosion of Congress as many Congress leaders, workers joined the BJP and AGP. I believe that there will be no Congress party in Assam by 2026. I don't want to comment on Bharat Narah, because I am not in touch with him. But I believe that there will be no more of the Congress party in Assam by 2026, they will survive only in some small pockets," he added.
Asserting the BJP's dominance, Sarma disclosed his efforts to lure members of rival parties, including the offer of two seats to Bhupen Kumar Borah and the expectation of Trinamool Congress members aligning with BJP.
He hinted at the likelihood of further defections from Congress ranks, portraying the party as a "fixed deposit" for the BJP to utilise strategically.
"I have made ready two seats for him (Bhupen Kumar Borah). All Trinamool members of Congress will join us. If I dial the candidate (Congress) for Sonitpur, he will join BJP. But I don't want this. As of now, the Assam Congress is in our hands. It is just like a fixed deposit, when needed, we will bring them. When it is needed for Modiji we will take them. Except for 1-2 blue-blooded dynasties, all red-blooded dynasty are ours," CM Sarma said.
The Assam Chief Minister also held discussions with Ranjit Dutta, the BJP candidate for the Sonitpur parliamentary constituency, signalling BJP's intent to fortify its electoral position in the region.
