Gangster, police officer killed in Kathua Medical college shootout

The probationary sub-Inspector, who was also injured during the exchange of fire, later died in hospital

Deepak Sharma, a probationary sub-Inspector, who was injured during the exchange of fire between the police and gangsters at Kathua Medical College, died in a Pathankot hospital later.


Deepak Sharma, a police officer, lost his life in a shootout at the Government Medical College in Kathua on Wednesday, in which a gangster was also killed, police officers have said. 


Members of a gang known as the Shunoo group, who were led by a man identified as Vasudev, drove into the college when they were being chased by a police squad from the Ramgarh region of Samba district and attempted to hide. 


They were, however, confronted by some policemen stationed there and soon after, in the ensuing shootout, Vasudev, was killed after receiving multiple bullet injuries.


Sharma, a probationary sub-Inspector, who was also seriously injured during the exchange of fire, later died in Amandeep Hospital in Pathankot.


Vasudev was also a murder accused, police said.


Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kathua Shivdeep Singh Jamwal, who visited the Medical College after the incident, said  the injured gang member recovered would be interrogated once he recovered.
