Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved the procurement of 114 Rafale fighter aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Thursday. The Rs 3.25 lakh-crore deal is so far India’s biggest ever weapons' agreement.
Besides, a green signal has been given for procuring six P-8I maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft for the Indian Navy and SCALP cruise missiles.
The approval from DAC came days before French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Delhi.
With this deal, the Indian Armed Forces will now have 176 Rafale jets. IAF already has 36 of them, while the Indian Navy placed orders for 26 of them last year.
