The Indian Navy is establishing a new base at Haldia, West Bengal. The naval base will enhance the Indian Navy’s presence in the Bay of Bengal amid the evolving regional warfare and geopolitics.
The move would also boost India’s maritime surveillance and rapid response capabilities.
Currently, the Navy operates under three major commands — Western at Mumbai, Eastern at Visakhapatnam, and Southern Training at Kochi.
The Indian Navy has main bases in cities such as Mumbai, Kochi, and Kolkata to guard the country’s long coastline. Port Blair is especially important as it hosts a joint command for the army, navy, and air force. The Navy is also making the Karwar base much larger through a scheme called 'Project Seabird' to improve its strength at sea.
