Indian Army Deputy Chief Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai becomes the first serving officer to be appointed as the new Military Advisor to the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS). Lt Gen Ghai was the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) during last year’s Operation Sindoor, and is currently serving at the post of Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy).
NSCS is being headed by India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
Lt General Ghai will succeed General N.S. Raja Subramani, who is now the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).
Lt Gen Ghai, who was not in the line of succession to become an Army Commander due to his position in the seniority hierarchy and the limited residual service remaining in his tenure, moved to key staff appointments after commanding a Corps. An officer of the Kumaon Regiment, Lt Gen Ghai has held several important command assignments during his career.
He subsequently served as Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) before being elevated as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff.
He commanded an infantry battalion in the western sector, an independent brigade in the Central sector, and later served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 56 Infantry Division in Arunachal Pradesh. Prior to his appointment as DGMO, he commanded the Srinagar-based 15 Corps.
