Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport has secured a position among the world's top 10 busiest airports for 2023, according to the Airports Council International (ACI) World.
Topping the list is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, with Dubai and Dallas airports claiming second and third positions, respectively.
ACI's release on Monday highlighted a global passenger forecast for 2023 nearing 8.5 billion, marking a notable recovery of 93.8% from pre-pandemic levels and a 27.2% increase from 2022. The report emphasised the significant role of international traffic in the industry's resurgence, nearly matching domestic traffic recovery.
Delhi airport, ranking tenth, accommodated over 722 million passengers in 2023, down from its ninth position in 2022.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport led with over 1.046 billion passengers, followed by Dubai International Airport with more than 869 million passengers, and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport with over 817 million passengers.
Five out of the top 10 busiest airports are situated in the United States. London's Heathrow Airport secured the fourth spot, followed by Tokyo's Haneda Airport, Denver International Airport, Istanbul Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, and Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.
ACI noted that the top 10 airports collectively represented close to 10% of global traffic, amounting to 806 million passengers. These airports saw a 19.8% increase from 2022 or a 0.7% gain compared to their 2019 results.
In terms of aircraft movements, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport also topped the list. ACI, as a trade association of the world's airports, released these findings.
