Adani Power's Godda plant, with a capacity of 1,600 MW, is believed to be the only facility in India committed to supplying 100% of its electricity to Bangladesh.

Adani Power will continue supplying electricity to Bangladesh from its 1,600 MW Jharkhand plant, despite new Indian guidelines allowing export-oriented units to sell power domestically in case of supply disruptions or defaults.

Adani Power announced on Friday that it will maintain the supply of electricity to Bangladesh from its 1,600 MW Jharkhand plant, which was specifically established to provide 100 per cent of its generated power to the neighbouring country.

Earlier this month, India's Ministry of Power amended its guidelines on power import and export, allowing electricity generated by plants set up as export-oriented units to be sold within India. The amendment specifies that the government may permit these plants to connect to the Indian grid—either inter-state or intra-state—to sell power domestically in cases of sustained non-scheduling of full or partial capacity, or if a default notice is issued by the generator for reasons such as delayed payments under the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

Adani Power's Godda plant, with a capacity of 1,600 MW, is believed to be the only facility in India committed to supplying 100 per cent of its electricity to Bangladesh.

In a statement, Adani Power clarified that the recent amendment to India's Power Export Guidelines is a universal provision designed to streamline power export processes across the industry, without altering existing agreements.

"We have been providing uninterrupted power to Bangladesh from our Godda plant. We understand the importance of reliable power supply to Bangladesh and remain committed to meeting our contractual obligations as per the demand schedule set by the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and the provisions of the PPA," the company stated.

The government's decision to allow plants with export commitments to supply electricity within India comes in the wake of the recent political crisis in Bangladesh. Additionally, India's ongoing efforts to ensure a zero-deficit power supply amid rising demand were noted, although the nation's electricity shortfall remains below one per cent.

India's power demand reached an all-time high of nearly 250 GW in May this year. The Ministry of Power has projected that peak demand could hit the 260 GW mark during the current summer season.
