Air India and Saudi Arabia's national carrier, Saudia, on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen their strategic partnership, paving the way for expanded cooperation aimed at improving connectivity, enhancing passenger services, and strengthening commercial ties between the two airlines as travel demand between India and Saudi Arabia continues to grow.
The agreement was signed by Saudia Group Director General Ibrahim Al-Omar and Air India Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Campbell Wilson during a formal ceremony attended by senior executives from both airline groups.
Under the MoU, the two carriers will gradually expand their existing partnership, beginning with a significant enhancement of their current codeshare agreement. The expanded arrangement is expected to provide passengers with access to a wider range of destinations, more flexible travel options, and seamless flight connections across the combined networks of both airlines.
The airlines said the cooperation will be implemented in phases and will extend beyond codeshare operations. The agreement also outlines plans to improve network connectivity, assess the feasibility of terminal co-location at selected airports to facilitate smoother passenger transfers, and explore a range of operational and commercial synergies.
Among the initiatives under consideration is closer collaboration between the airlines' frequent flyer programmes, allowing customers to enjoy greater benefits, improved loyalty rewards, and a more integrated travel experience. Such cooperation is expected to enhance convenience for passengers who regularly travel between India, Saudi Arabia, and destinations beyond.
The two carriers will also examine the possibility of extending the partnership to other airlines within their respective groups. This includes Air India Express, the Tata Group-owned low-cost subsidiary of Air India, and flyadeal, Saudia Group's low-cost airline. Expanding the partnership to these carriers could significantly broaden travel options across domestic and regional markets while creating additional connectivity for international passengers.
Speaking on the occasion, Saudia Group Director General Ibrahim Al-Omar described India as one of the airline's most important international markets, highlighting the rapidly increasing movement of business travellers, tourists, pilgrims, and expatriates between the two countries.
He said the expanded partnership would enable customers to benefit from greater network coverage, improved scheduling flexibility, and a smoother travel experience. According to Al-Omar, the agreement also creates new opportunities for deeper operational and commercial cooperation while laying the foundation for a broader long-term relationship between the two airline groups.
He added that as passenger traffic continues to grow, closer collaboration between the national carriers of India and Saudi Arabia would support both airlines' expansion strategies and strengthen aviation links between the two nations.
Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson said the growing economic relationship and strong people-to-people ties between India and Saudi Arabia have created significant opportunities for the aviation sector.
He noted that trade, investment, tourism, and religious travel have all contributed to rising demand for air connectivity, making enhanced cooperation between the two airlines both timely and strategically important.

Wilson said Air India and Saudia, operating in two of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets, are well positioned to develop a deeper partnership that delivers greater convenience for customers while supporting the long-term growth ambitions of both carriers.
The MoU establishes a broad framework for cooperation across multiple business areas, enabling both airlines to strengthen their international networks and better respond to increasing passenger demand. It also reflects the growing emphasis among global airlines on forming strategic alliances to expand market reach and improve operational efficiency without launching entirely new routes independently.
Since its privatisation under the Tata Group in 2022, Air India has significantly expanded its global partnerships as part of its transformation strategy. The airline currently maintains 25 codeshare agreements and more than 120 interline partnerships with airlines worldwide, providing its passengers with seamless access to over 1,000 destinations across multiple continents through partner networks.
The latest agreement with Saudia marks another important milestone in Air India's international expansion strategy and is expected to further strengthen air connectivity between India and Saudi Arabia, benefiting business travellers, tourists, pilgrims, and the large Indian diaspora living and working in the Gulf nation.
