Leading hyperscale data centre operator AirTrunk has announced plans to invest more than Rs 3 lakh crore (USD 30 billion) in India by 2030, significantly expanding the country's digital infrastructure capacity and reinforcing its role as a key pillar of the company's global growth strategy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed AirTrunk's investment plans following a meeting with the company's founder and Chief Executive Officer, Robin Khuda, on Friday. The proposed investment includes the development of 5 gigawatts (GW) of data centre capacity across India, making it one of the largest planned investments in the country's digital infrastructure sector.

In a post on X, Modi highlighted the significance of the announcement, describing it as a major boost to India's rapidly expanding digital economy.
"India's digital infrastructure journey is gathering remarkable momentum. AirTrunk has announced plans to invest around Rs 3 lakh crore (USD 30 billion) in India and develop 5 GW of data centre capacity. This is among the largest proposed investments in the country's digital infrastructure ecosystem," the Prime Minister said.

Modi added that the investment would further strengthen India's emergence as a global destination for cloud computing, artificial intelligence and advanced digital services. He noted that the project is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities, support local supply chains and contribute to innovation-driven economic growth.

"It is clear that the future of the world's digital economy is increasingly being shaped in India," he stated. AirTrunk is a leading hyperscale data centre specialist that provides infrastructure platforms for cloud service providers, digital content companies and large enterprise customers across the Asia-Pacific and Middle East region.

Commenting on the announcement, AirTrunk CEO Robin Khuda said India's rapidly growing digital economy, combined with supportive government policies, has created one of the most attractive technology investment destinations in the world.

"Prime Minister Modi's vision for India's digital economy has helped create one of the world's most compelling destinations for technology investment. India has the scale, talent and ambition required to become a global AI powerhouse. AirTrunk is excited to support that vision," Khuda said in a company statement.

The company is backed by global investment giant Blackstone, one of the largest foreign investors in India, along with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB). Industry observers believe the proposed investment programme ranks among the most significant digital infrastructure initiatives currently under consideration in the country and could play a major role in supporting the next phase of growth in cloud computing and artificial intelligence.

According to AirTrunk, the planned investment of more than Rs 3,000 billion by 2030 reflects the strategic importance of India within the company's long-term expansion plans. "AirTrunk plans to invest more than INR 3,000 billion (USD 30 billion) in India by 2030 in support of digital infrastructure capacity, positioning the country as a cornerstone of AirTrunk's global growth strategy and one of the company's most significant long-term investment markets," the company said.

The proposed development pipeline, spread across multiple states and union territories, is expected to help advance India's ambitions of becoming a global hub for AI and cloud infrastructure. The company said the initiative would also generate considerable economic activity, create jobs and strengthen the broader technology ecosystem.

The announcement comes shortly after AirTrunk entered the Indian market through the acquisition of Lumina CloudInfra in April this year. The acquisition provided the company with an existing development pipeline of approximately 600 MW across key data centre markets including Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad.

AirTrunk specialises in the development and operation of large-scale data centre campuses designed to deliver high reliability, technological innovation and industry-leading standards in energy and water efficiency.

Founded in 2015, the company established Australia's first and largest hyperscale data centres in 2017 before embarking on an aggressive regional expansion strategy. Today, AirTrunk operates a growing network of hyperscale facilities across the Asia-Pacific and Middle East, serving some of the world's largest technology and cloud service providers.
