Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday virtually inaugurated the Ahmedabad Heritage Park, a heritage-themed public space developed by the UNM Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the promoters of the Torrent Group. Located on the eastern bank of the Sabarmati river, the park has been created to showcase the city's rich history, cultural legacy and architectural heritage while providing residents with a new recreational destination.

Developed in collaboration with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the Heritage Park has been built at a cost of around Rs 10 crore and covers nearly 20,000 square metres. The park is situated between Swami Vivekananda Bridge and Nehru Bridge, making it a prominent addition to Ahmedabad's expanding riverfront landscape.

According to a statement issued by the UNM Foundation, the Heritage Park is the 12th public park developed and maintained by the organisation under its Pratiti urban renewal initiative. The programme focuses on creating inclusive public spaces that blend environmental sustainability, community engagement and the preservation of local heritage.

The newly inaugurated park has been designed to offer visitors an immersive journey through Ahmedabad's historical evolution. It features five permanent thematic installations that highlight important milestones in the city's cultural and architectural development.

Among the key attractions are exhibits depicting the various dynasties that ruled Ahmedabad and shaped its identity over the centuries. Another installation focuses on the city's historic Royal Axis, connecting iconic landmarks such as Bhadra Fort, Teen Darwaza and Jama Masjid, all of which played significant roles in Ahmedabad's political, commercial and social history.

The park also celebrates the city's artistic traditions through an exhibit dedicated to Mata ni Pachhedi, the distinctive hand-painted folk art associated with Gujarat. Additional installations trace the shifting urban centre of Ahmedabad over different periods and recall the once-famous circus grounds that occupied the Sabarmati riverbed, offering visitors a glimpse into the city's changing landscape and public life.

The project aims to combine recreation with education by encouraging visitors to engage with Ahmedabad's historical and cultural heritage through thoughtfully designed open spaces and informative displays. Landscaped gardens, walking paths and public seating areas have also been incorporated to create an inviting environment for families, students and tourists.

The UNM Foundation said the Heritage Park reflects its broader commitment to urban transformation through projects that preserve cultural identity while enhancing the quality of public spaces. Developed in partnership with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, the initiative is expected to serve as both a recreational hub and an educational landmark for residents and visitors alike.

The Heritage Park adds another attraction to Ahmedabad's Sabarmati riverfront, reinforcing the city's efforts to integrate heritage conservation with modern urban development and create accessible public spaces that celebrate its rich historical legacy.
