Popular dairy brand, Amul is poised to enter the European market following the “highly successful” launch of its milk products in the United States, according to Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of AMUL and the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF).
Speaking during the 11th Dr Verghese Kurien Memorial Oration at XLRI, Jamshedpur, Mehta described this potential expansion as a historic moment for the brand.
“India is now the largest milk producer in the world and is set to produce one-third of the world's total milk in the coming years,” Mehta asserted.
He stressed that dairy is not merely a business but a lifeline for rural India, adding that the business its importance to the nation’s economy and especially to rural India.
Mehta praised the cooperative model established by Dr Verghese Kurien, the founder of AMUL, stating, “If India could offer a gift to the world, it would be the cooperative working system—a gift Dr Kurien gave us.”
He highlighted AMUL's impressive statistics, noting that the cooperative collects over 31 million litres of milk daily and operates 107 dairy plants across India, offering over 50 products.
With an annual turnover of ₹80,000 crore, AMUL has become one of the world's strongest dairy brands, owned by 3.6 million farmers.
Nirmala Kurien, daughter of Dr Kurien, reflected on her father’s vision, noting that more than half a century ago, he believed that a milk-deficient nation could achieve self-sufficiency.
Today, India proudly stands as the world’s largest producer of milk, she remarked.
