The biogas sector has secured investment commitments worth ₹1,850 crore during the Renewable Energy India (REI) Expo 2024, held from October 3-5 in Greater Noida, according to the Indian Biogas Association (IBA).

"The IBA has received investment commitments through joint ventures, memorandums of understanding (MoUs), and letters of intent (LoIs) totalling ₹1,850 crore," said IBA Chairman Gaurav Kedia. These commitments, he added, are expected to materialise over the next two to three years.

The REI Expo 2024 saw participation from 47 exhibitors, representing 10 countries with biogas expertise, including Germany, Sweden, and the UK.

Kedia noted a particularly strong international interest, with MoUs worth over ₹900 crore signed for joint ventures and nearly 50 LoIs received for establishing compressed biogas plants in India.

Founded in 2011 and revamped in 2015, the IBA serves as a nationwide platform for bioenergy operators, manufacturers, and planners, and collaborates with international bodies like the German Biogas Association to promote the sector’s growth in India.

The REI Expo, one of India’s largest renewable energy events, focuses on bioenergy, solar, wind, electric vehicles, and energy efficiency technologies. It is supported by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and key industry players.

IBA President Dr. A R Shukla highlighted the success of this year’s event, crediting the active participation of MNRE and scientists from Sardar Swaran Singh National Institute of Bio-Energy (SSS-NIBE) in boosting confidence in the bioenergy sector.

Shukla emphasised the sector’s potential to achieve energy self-sufficiency with the right policy support, suggesting bioenergy could eventually replace fossil fuels entirely.
