Today, India celebrated the National Girl Child Day, a profound narrative of empowerment that takes shape, promising not just a celebration but a catalyst for lasting change.
This annual occasion initiated in the year 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and the government of India. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about the challenges faced by girls and advocating for numerous central and state government schemes aimed at supporting the education and well-being of the girl child.
PM Narendra Modi posted on X, "On National Girl Child Day, we salute the indomitable spirit and accomplishments of the Girl Child. We also recognise the rich potential of every girl child in all sectors. They are change-makers who make our nation and society better. Over the last decade, our government has been making many efforts to build a nation where every girl child has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive"

Central and State Government schemes aimed at supporting the education and well-being of the girl child:
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP)
Launched by the government of India in 2015, BBBP addresses the declining Child Sex Ratio(CSR) and empowers girls over their life cycles.
The scheme encourages the opening of Sukanya Samriddhi Accounts for girls under the age of ten born in India.
2. Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana
The scheme is part of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Campaign, this small deposit scheme is exclusively for girl children below10 years of age.
The scheme assists in meeting education and marriage expenses.
3. Balika Samridhi Yojana
Targeting girl children in families below the poverty line (BPL), this scheme born after August 15, 1997 , aims to elevate the status of the girl child and promote positive changes in family and community attitudes.
4. Mukhyamantri Rajshri Yojana
Introduced by the government of Rajasthan in 2008, this financial assistance scheme empowers girl children economically, with eligibility criteria including residency in Rajasthan, birth after June 1,2016 and the mother having a Bhamashah Card.
5. Mukhyamantri Laadli Laxmi Yojana
The Madhya Pradesh government’s Ladli Laxmi yojana focuses on creating positive perceptions towards the birth of girl children, improving sex ratios, and promoting literacy.
Eligibility includes parents belonging to Madhya Pradesh, the child not getting married before 18, and being below the poverty line.
6. CBSE Udaan Scheme
Launched by the CBSE under the Ministry of Human Resources Development, this project aims to address low enrolment of female students in prestigious engineering institutions.
Eligibility criteria include securing an average of 70% in class 10 and a minimum of 807 in science and mathematics.
7. National scheme of incentives to girls for secondary education
Launched in 2008, the centrally sponsored scheme encourages the enrolment of girl children aged 14-18 in secondary education, especially those who have passed class VIII.
8. Nanda Devi Kanya Yojana
The Uttarakhand government’s initiative aims to promote education and empowerment for girls from economically disadvantaged backgrounds by providing financial assistance to those in class 12 from SC,ST or BPL categories.
