The centre has approved 40 tourism projects worth over Rs 3,295 crore across 23 states aimed at developing lesser-known destinations into iconic tourist spots, officials said Friday.
The projects are part of the Ministry of Tourism’s initiative to promote balanced tourism distribution across the country and ease the pressure on high-traffic areas.
According to the Ministry, these projects will focus on creating impactful tourist destinations, boosting local economies, and generating employment through sustainable tourism initiatives.
The Ministry of Tourism issued operational guidelines for the Special Assistance to States/Union Territories for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme, allowing states to submit project proposals for iconic tourism destinations.
By the deadline of October 15, 2024, the ministry received 87 proposals, totaling more than Rs 8,000 crore.
After reviewing the submissions, the Ministry shortlisted 40 projects for funding, with a total cost of Rs 3,295.76 crore. Some of the selected projects include Rang Ghar in Sivasagar (Assam), Matsyagandha Lake in Saharsa (Bihar), a proposed Town Square in Porvorim (Goa), and Orchha in Madhya Pradesh, among others.
The SASCI scheme aims to provide long-term, interest-free loans for 50 years to states, enabling the development of iconic tourist centres and their global marketing.
“This initiative aims to reduce the pressure on high-traffic tourist spots by promoting lesser-known destinations,” the Ministry said in a statement. “By enhancing these areas, we hope to boost local economies and ensure sustainable growth in the tourism sector.”
The states have been given a two-year timeline to complete the projects, with funds expected to be released before March 2026.
