Domestic air traffic rises 5.7 pc to 1.31 crore in August

Indian airlines carried 1.31 crore passengers in August, an increase of 5.7 per cent compared to the year-ago period, according to official data released on Friday.

In August 2023, carriers had flown 1.24 crore domestic passengers while in July this year, the count stood at 1.29 crore.


Indian airlines carried 1.31 crore passengers in August 2024, marking a 5.7% increase compared to the same period last year, according to data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday.

 

In August 2023, airlines had flown 1.24 crore domestic passengers, while in July 2024, the number stood at 1.29 crore.

 

The DGCA report also noted that 1,79,744 passengers were impacted by flight delays in August, with airlines paying around ₹2.44 crore in facilitation.

 

 Flight cancellations affected 38,599 passengers, and airlines spent approximately ₹1.14 crore on compensation and related facilities. The overall flight cancellation rate for the month was 0.83%.

 

Additionally, 728 passengers were denied boarding, and airlines paid ₹77.96 lakh in compensation and facilities.

 

"Passengers carried by domestic airlines from January to August 2024 reached 1,054.66 lakh, compared to 1,006.16 lakh during the same period the previous year, reflecting an annual growth of 4.82% and a monthly increase of 5.70%," the DGCA report stated.

 

In terms of On-Time Performance (OTP), Akasa Air led with 71.2% in August, followed by Vistara at 68.6%, and AIX Connect at 66.8%.

 

Both IndiGo and Air India had an OTP of 66%, while Alliance Air and SpiceJet recorded 55.3% and 31%, respectively. OTP was calculated across four metro airports: Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.

 

SpiceJet, which is currently under enhanced DGCA surveillance due to ongoing challenges, saw its market share drop to 2.3% in August, down from 3.1% in July. In contrast, IndiGo's market share rose to 62.4%, and Air India's increased to 14.7%.

 

 Vistara’s share climbed to 10.3%, while AIX Connect and Akasa Air saw their shares dip to 4.4% and 4.5%, respectively. Alliance Air's market share remained unchanged at 0.9%.

 

The report also highlighted that 1,031 passenger-related complaints were received by domestic airlines in August, with around 0.79 complaints per 10,000 passengers carried.
