Nand Kishore Goenka, patriarch of the Goenka family, noted philanthropist and father of Essel Group founder and Chairman Subhash Chandra, passed away on Monday. He was 96.
Respected for his lifelong dedication to social service, community welfare and philanthropy, Goenka was regarded as the moral anchor of the family. His values of simplicity, compassion and public service left a deep and lasting influence on generations of the Goenka family.
Though he largely remained away from the corporate spotlight, Goenka played a pivotal role in shaping the family's ethos through his commitment to charitable causes and humanitarian work. The Essel Group described him as a humble and compassionate individual whose life was devoted to serving society.
Announcing his father's passing in a post on X, Subhash Chandra wrote, "Today morning, our beloved father Nand Kishore Goenka breathed his last. Though all in the family are saddened, my desire is to celebrate his 96 years of life, which was full of samaj seva, cow seva and national service as an RSS swayamsevak."

Nand Kishore Goenka is survived by a family that has played a prominent role in India's corporate landscape. His son, Subhash Chandra, founded the Essel Group and later established Zee Entertainment, one of India's pioneering private satellite television networks, transforming the country's broadcasting industry. Under his leadership, the group also expanded into infrastructure, packaging, technology, education and entertainment.
Expressing its condolences, the Essel Group said the family's guiding patriarch would be remembered not only for his personal integrity and humanitarian outlook but also for the enduring values he instilled, which continue to inspire both the organisation and the wider community.
