EU to enforce tech rules soon as probe nears completion

The European Union is intent on ensuring its customers’ online protection in its probe into social media platforms like Facebook, X, and Instagram, which will be covered under the bloc’s Digital Services Act

The European Union’s landmark Digital Services Act (DSA) is probing social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X, and TikTok as well as Chinese retailers AliExpress and Temu

The European Union’s (EU) investigations into online platforms like X and Facebook are nearing completing, EU digital chief, Henna Virkkunen told a leading media agency on Friday.

The European Union’s landmark Digital Services Act (DSA) is probing social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X, and TikTok as well as Chinese retailers AliExpress and Temu to ensure consumers’ online protection and regulate content.

"I'm expecting that in the coming weeks and months, we will be able to finalise many of those investigations," Virkkunen said, adding that "these are now the first decisions we are going to make under the Digital Services Act".

The EU has been steadfast in its decision to implement the rules of the DSA in the face of threats by US President Donald Trump, who said he will impose levies on countries that target US tech companies.

Virkkunen maintains it is the “sovereign right of the European Union to decide about our own digital rules”, adding that after the conclusions of the current inquiries, many of which have been underway for over a year, new ones await.

"We will probably start new ones because the DSA, of course, it's a huge legislation," she said.

The digital chief stressed that the EU would continue to enforce the DSA and Digital Markets Act (DMA) "because these are very fair and transparent legislations and rules for everybody who's doing business and operating in the European Union".

She said the EU’s aim was "to make Europe faster and easier, simpler for the businesses".
